The 2013 High School Wing Design Competition started off with heavy fog on the flight line May 7 at Lake Cumberland Regional Airport in Somerset, Kentucky. By the time teams had checked in and started their technical inspections the fog had lifted and model aircraft wings designed by Kentucky high school students were ready to fly.
Teams traveled from across Kentucky to meet in Somerset and compete in a statewide competition sponsored by NASA Kentucky, the University of Kentucky College of Engineering, and the Kentucky Institute for Aerospace Education. The competition is thought to be the only one of its kind in the country that requires high school teams to design and construct aircraft wings for a remote-controlled model airplane, then prove their wing designs in flight during competition to meet speed and load-bearing challenges.
After a long day of aircraft flying one after the other, first-year competitors Conner High School from Hebron, Kentucky finished with teams in first and third place overall, as well as winning category awards for Most Innovative Design, Fastest Lap, and Heaviest Payload. 2011 winners Muhlenberg County finished in second place this year, while 2012 winners Taylor County received this year’s Aviators’ Choice Award selected through a demanding inspection and interview process conducted by professional aviators. Frankfort High School received Honorable Mention in the Aviators’ Choice category.
NASA Kentucky, UK, and KIAE would like to thank Lake Cumberland Regional Airport and the city of Somerset for hosting the largest Wing Design Competition to date. Special thanks go to teachers and facilitators at participating schools as well as UK Engineering professors and students who planned and administered the event.
